Roosevelt celebrates its 90th anniversary on 90th school day

On its 90th school day -- Wednesday, January 16, 2019 -- in its 90th year, Roosevelt is welcoming back nine former staff members/students and one current staff member for a morning steeped in history.

The guests will gather at 8:30 a.m. for the debut of a new video history of the school researched and assembled by recent alum Jonathan Spychalski for his Eagle Scout project, and view his model of the school and other memorabilia.

The guests will then divide into four groups to visit classrooms in the morning, spending about 20-30 minutes with each classroom group talking with students about the school's history -- perhaps reading a short story and sharing a memory or talking about an artifact. The guests will stay through lunch, with several then visiting the afternoon kindergartners.

After lunch, Roosevelt's fifth grade Boy Scouts will provide a tour of the school for the guests, taking them to view areas most recently remodeled, such as the new office, renovated Learning Resource Center and primary grade corridor.

The expected guests include:

  • Dr. Sally Pryor - former District 64 Superintendent and former Roosevelt Principal
  • Lucy Erickson - retired from D64 senior program - father was first custodian!
  • Sharon Shademann - former teacher
  • Peggy Flannagan - former first grade teacher
  • Bonnie Gudakas - former school secretary
  • Charlie Schlom - former student from the 1960s
  • Sheri Roche - former Assistant Principal and former D64 administrator
  • Barbara Kinzer - former teacher
  • Cathy Reardon - former social worker
  • Mike Taglia - former student and current Lincoln Middle School teacher

Roosevelt has woven its anniversary celebration through this school year. At the start of the year, teachers received special T-shirts (Roosevelt School established 1928) and the annual Tiger Trot walkathon fundraiser in the fall featured a 90th birthday theme.

This year's fifth grade class also formed the numeral 90 for their official yearbook picture, too!
