Hello from Franklin’s New Assistant Principal

November 2, 2014

Hello Franklin Families!

It's hard to believe November is underway! The leaves have changed and the cooler air is sweeping in. I wanted to take a moment to say hello.

My name is Emily Lech; I'm the new assistant principal at Franklin and Carpenter Elementary Schools. It's been a true pleasure to join the Franklin community. Mr. Walsh has been a great support in my transition so far. Already in my short time here, its apparent families and staff are invested in each of our Franklin students! It's no surprise then, that our students are engaged, happy, and sincere which is reflected in their attitude and actions each day.

For example, while in Kindergarten, I observed students working together during centers to build a foundation in early reading. “ZZZ is for Zebra,” one student says matching the letter and picture. “Yes,” says another pointing to her mouth, “ZZZ. That sounds right.”  In 1st grade, the class collectively recites me poems they’ve worked on all week-acted out with grand gestures and excited voices. In 2nd grade, students share their learning by regularly creating e-books proudly displayed on the class website. Each student understanding they are a valuable part of the greater whole. In 3rd grade, I enjoyed reading Halloween stories to Ms. Majeski’s class who sat wide eyed and full of laughter urging me to read “just one more!” Which of course, I gladly did. In 4th grade, students ask good questions as they explore complicated decimals. In 5th grade, camp created a lasting bond that will leave a lasting impression in the year ahead. In Library, students happily shared compliments as they swarmed around the display of decorated Halloween pumpkins (a treasured tradition here at Franklin). In PE I watched as students ran the mile, running side by side, encouraging the other not fall behind. In art, students huddle around Ms. Hurley as she models concepts such as concentric circles in flowers. Excited artists hurry back to their tables to begin. In music, students listen to famous works, depicting what they ‘heard’  and ‘felt’ through their own drawings. Teachers are invested in your child’s school experience evidenced through the smiles and encouraging words I hear and see each day.

These are just a few glimpses into life at Franklin School. There is so much more yet to discover. This year my goal is to support and connect with you, your children, and our hard working teachers! Please reach out to begin building this partnership. We welcome your feedback-both glows and grows. :)

As a former elementary school teacher in Evanston, Chicago, and Washington D.C. I can promise you that I believe all children have inherent worth, can reach high academic goals, and should be encouraged to be a friend, lend a hand, and explore what they love.

Thank you for welcoming me. I look forward to a great year ahead!

Warm Regards,

Emily Lech, Assistant Principal
