The week of July 10th marked the midpoint in District 64's summer 2017 construction season, with projects on schedule to be completed for the opening of school on Thursday, August 17.

The District is investing more than $3.8 million for Health Life Safety, critical infrastructure, and capital project improvements as part of a five-year plan to ensure all schools are safe, warm, and dry. View the full list of 2017 projects on this webpageThe District's three oldest buildings dating to 1928 -- Lincoln, Field and Roosevelt -- are an important focus of work this year.

Here is a short overview of projects now underway:

  • Lincoln Middle School is undergoing several visible changes this summer, as well as extensive work indoors. The most visible project is the tuckpointing of the bricks, as crumbling mortar is removed and replaced to maintain the building's structural soundness and ensure it remains watertight. Earlier this spring, all of the windows at Lincoln were replaced with new thermal windows, which have stopped drafts and water leakage into classrooms. Replacement of Lincoln's roof began last summer, with an additional area being completed this year. Inside Lincoln, the Learning Resource Center is being repaired and updated to provide more flexible learning spaces. The adjacent entry on Crescent Avenue is being redesigned to provide security, accessibility, and supervised entry directly to the school office. Old galvanized water piping is also being replaced throughout, while re-flooring of the hallways will begin next week.
  • A new roof is the focus at Roosevelt School. Replacement of the roof is well underway, and will stop leakage that disrupts learning while damaging the ceilings and walls.
  • New windows at Field School will provide more light and thermal efficiency. Two sides of the building have been completed, and the front of the building is next! As at Lincoln, the new windows will eliminate drafts and leakage into classrooms.
  • Updates to Learning Resource Centers at Field School and Franklin School are coming along on schedule. The renovations will create more flexible spaces for students engaged in future-ready learning. Field's LRC has progressed to the painting stage, and flooring will be installed next week. Franklin’s also will be painted next week with flooring to follow. Work on the shelving will take place after the completion of the floor.
  • Elementary school kitchens are being prepared for the new hot lunch program. Demolition of four of the five elementary kitchens took place in June. With the conclusion of the Worlds of Wonder summer program July 14, remodeling at Washington's kitchen will begin. The kitchens are being outfitted to serve food delivered from the full-service kitchens at the middle schools.
