Our efforts to create a culture of civil behavior continues.  This program began in an effort to help our students develop the skills they need to be respectful and caring members of their families, schools and communities.

The good work that had been done in our middle schools to develop Emotional Intelligence and in our K-5 buildings to instill the traits of Respect and Responsibility in our students, was the foundation we built upon to launch our "Getting to the Heart of the Matter" civil behavior initiative.  We are fortunate to have the luxury of high academic student achievement and supportive families, enabling us to take our curriculum and instructional program to this next level.

Why Focus on Civil Behavior?  District 64 chose to focus on civil behavior in order to:

  • Take a proactive approach to the development of students' character and social and emotional skills.
  • Provide strategies to help students with behavior and social issues in structured and unstructured situations.
  • Positively impact students' academic achievement and overall success in life.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

District 64 uses the acronym R-E-S-P-E-C-T at our K-5 schools to describe the values and skills we want our students to learn. RESPECT stands for:

  • Responsibility
  • Empathy
  • Strategies
  • Positive Attitude
  • Excellence
  • Citizenship
  • Trustworthiness

At the middle schools (grades 6-8), the focus is on the five domains of emotional intelligence:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-regulation
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social Skills
