We study many aspects of math in fourth grade.
-Review addition and subtraction. We work on this the traditional manner (by columns). We also break up numbers to make them easier to add or subtract in our heads.
Example:
29 = 20 + 9
+37 = 30 + 7
50 + 16 = 66
-Multiplication and division. We work on both simple math facts as well as using these facts to complete two- and three- digit math problems. The regular math algorithms (the way fourth grade parents learned this) will be taught and practiced until they are automatic. In addition, there is an emphasis on using what a student knows to figure out what he/she does not know.
Example:
12 X 8 = can use (10 X 8) + (2 X 8)
12 X 8 = 80 + 16
12 X 8 = 96
This problem can also be solved by doubling 6 X 8 = 48.
