Understanding Special Education in Illinois documentWhere do you go when your child needs help?
If you, or your child's teacher feel that your child is experiencing difficulty in the classroom a referral can be made to the Pupil Service Team.
Each building has a Pupil Service team which meets weekly to discuss students who may be struggling academically, behaviorally &/or socially. The team will discuss the concerns and provide strategies that the classroom teacher can implement to help your child. Once these stratagies have been implemented, the team will monitor your student's progress. If your student has not made sufficient progress after 6 weeks, your child may be referred for an evaluation.
At this point, you will be invited to a meeting to discuss the concerns. If the team (you are a member of the team) determines an evaluation is needed, you will sign a consent form allowing the team to gather more information about your child.
An evaluation may include the following components or domains:
| health history |
social history |
vision & hearing screening |
academic evaluation |
| cognitive evaluation |
speech/language evaluation | motor evaluation |
functional evaluation |
Once the evaluation is complete, the team will reconvene to discuss the results of the evaluation. If your child does not qualify for special education services based on the results, other options and recommendations can be discussed. If your child is found eligible, an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) will be will be developed for your child.
