School to begin one day earlier

District 64 classes will begin one day earlier than previously scheduled. The Board of Education on Thursday night amended the 2020-21 school calendar making Wednesday, August 26 the first day of school. Kindergarten will begin on Aug. 27 and preschool now starts on Aug. 28.

The change was based on a new law instituted this year in Illinois making Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, a State Holiday. The Institute Day previously scheduled for Nov. 3 has been moved to Tuesday, April 6, 2021. Therefore, there will be no student attendance on April 6, 2021, ensuring the safety of all students during an election day when all school buildings are used as polling places.

These changes necessitate that an additional day of attendance be added to the beginning of the year, making Monday, August 24, and Tuesday, 25, 2020 Institute Days, and the first day of school Wednesday, August 26, 2020. All changes comply with the current Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements.

The Board first approved the calendar in December of 2019.
