Letter from the Principal . . .

 Dear Carpenter Families,

Happy 2012!  I sincerely hope that your child’s winter break was filled with happiness and fun.  The children have been progress monitored for reading in Grades K-5 using the Dibels Assessment (Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills).  Dibels measures a child’s letter naming and phonemic awareness in Kindergarten and 1st grade.  In grades 2-5 it measures reading fluency.  The students in grades 3-5 have taken the MCAP (Math Concepts and Applications), which is an 8-minute paper pencil test.  This test measures skills in mathematics. It is used as a universal screener for our data gathering.  MAP testing (Measure for Academic Progress) is being completed.  As you may remember, this computer accessed test, focuses on progress in reading and math.  This “round,” 2nd graders will be tested for both math and reading.  All third graders will be tested in reading.  For fourth and fifth grades, the children to be evaluated were designated by teacher recommendation.  ACCESS testing is for children in K-5.  This test is for the English Language Learners.  Please continue to be encouraging to your child and discuss with him or her that what everyone expects is that “they try their personal best!”

We continue to model “Civil Behavior” for the children.  Our focus this year is, “Caught Caring at Carpenter” Children and adults are given paws for demonstrating “caring” behaviors.  These paws can be seen in the showcase and in some teachers’ classrooms.  Feel free to acknowledge a child or adult you have seen caught caring, by emailing me.  I will see to it that they get their “Paw!”

I would like for each of you to evaluate how you communicate as adults.  I am saddened that the Crossing Guards, Patrol, and other staff have had disrespectful behavior by “some” people when dropping off their child/ren or picking them up.  It is important that we model daily, what we expect from our children.  Remember when the staff are outside of the building and see unsafe actions, they will be expecting that you listen for the sake of all of our students.  One simple short cut, for example - having your child cross mid street, or driving through the barricades during drop off or pick up times could in fact, cause a tragic event. Please make certain that you are not texting while operating your vehicle. As you know, this is illegal in school zones.  Also, your child needs to be secured with a seat belt.  We love and value the lives of our children.  Please help us to keep everyone safe!

If you should come to the school grounds and find a child you know “waiting on the playground (or somewhere on school grounds) for a parent, please walk them into the office.  A parent could be running late or a child could be confused about where they are supposed to go.   We would like to make sure that every child gets to where they need to be.

As we look ahead to Valentine’s Day celebrations, your child can choose to bring in non-edible items for “treats” such as stickers or pencils.  Thank you for your understanding.  Food items are not permitted.

We have many exciting events coming up this month; beginning with the Elementary Foundation event, on Saturday evening, January 28th, 2012 at Café La Cave. This event raises money to support grants written by staff.  Due to Mrs. Seputis’s creativity and grant writing idea last year, our children have ukulele’s!  We would love to see you support their efforts.

There are many events coming up so check the dates below. Have a wonderful January and keep warm.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marcy Wolff Canel
