Guest Post: Carpenter from the Eyes of a New Assistant Principal

Hello Carpenter Families!

It's hard to believe October is underway! The leaves are changing and the cooler air is sweeping in. Now that we've all settled back into school, I wanted to take a moment to say hello.

My name is Emily Lech; I'm the new assistant principal at Carpenter and Franklin Elementary Schools. It's been a true pleasure to join the Carpenter community. Mr. Balduf has been a great support to me so far. Already in my short time here, its apparent families and staff are invested in each of our 445 Carpenter students! It's no surprise then, that our students are engaged, happy, and sincere which is reflected in their attitude and actions each day.

For example, in Kindergarten I caught two little ones in the hall; one modeling to the other how to tie a pair of shoes. In first grade, students eagerly typed away on a google doc, later shared with their teacher. In second grade, students respectfully raised hands to ask questions about their classmates' 'all about me' bags. A third grader caught me in the hall and shared how excited she was about her new classmate from Japan, and couldn't wait to invite her to their lunch table. During the track-a-thon, 4th graders cheered one another on from the sidelines. Fifth graders collaborate weekly online through our  1:1 technology initiative. In PE, students clearly understand learning targets are connected to what they do. The hallways are filled with hidden art that Carpenter kids are encouraged to find. In Library, we are learning how to find that just right book. Down the hall, new melodies spill out of Music class. Meanwhile, students  happily skip back to class after literacy group; a love for reading growing each day.

These are just a few glimpses into life at Carpenter School. There is so much more yet to discover. This year my goal is to support and connect with you, your children, and our hard working teachers! Please reach out to begin building this partnership. We welcome your feedback-both glows and grows. :)

As a former elementary school teacher in Evanston, Chicago, and Washington D.C. I can promise you that I believe all children have inherent worth, can reach high academic goals, and should be encouraged to be a friend, lend a hand, and explore what they love.

Thank you for welcoming me. I look forward to a great year ahead!

Warm Regards,

Emily Lech, Assistant Principal
