Franklin Rocks!!!

Franklin Rocks!!!

Franklin Rocks!

By: Emily Lech, assistant principal

We have kicked it up another notch with our Franklin Rocks behavior program. We are implementing a new system as a way to positively reinforce students and classes on a regular basis.

This is how it works:

Every teacher has a mason jar in their class.  Staff is given colored rocks. Each color represents a different pillar of our Franklin Rocks Matrix: Respect= Purple, Optimism=Yellow, Citizenship- Blue, Kindness=Green, Self-control=Orange.

When a teacher or staff member sees an individual student or class demonstrating one of the pillars of the matrix (for example: helping a friend tie his shoe in the hallway. Or helping a teacher pick up a pile of papers she dropped), the teacher will give the student or the classroom teacher the rock and explicitly tell the student or teacher why. (for example: Mrs. B, I love how your class is walking in the hall). The teacher only gives rocks to OTHER students outside his/her class. This promotes a shared responsibility to encourage and guide all Franklin students.

When a rock is given to a student or the class, the rock is placed in their class mason jar.  On the last school day of each month, classes count their total in the jar. The teacher fills in the google doc shared with Mr. Walsh and Ms. Lech.  At the end of the day one of us will make an announcement who are the top two winning classes for the month! These two classes are awarded the golden guitar which they keep inside their classroom for that month! Each individual student in the class is awarded a bracelet the color of the rock they earned the most as a class.

For November, we had just a handful of days to jump start our new plan. Students were so excited. Lots of affirmation and positive reinforcement was evident at Franklin School. Our first place winner was Mr. LoPresti’s class & the second place winner was a tie: Ms. Brennan and Ms. Sianis’s classes!

Our school goal for the entire year is 1,000 rocks! I know we can reach our goal!

Talk to your child at home & encourage him/her! We look forward to continue to focus on developing the social and emotional well beings of all our students.
