D64 Shining Stars: Emerson's Sophie & Deo

Emerson student Sophie Erickson and Head Custodian Deo Valentin are the D64 Shining Stars for May! We were honored to recognize these two awesome individuals at the May School Board Meeting.

The Emerson Admin team of Tessa Shulman, Maria Soulias, and Pat Conlin was there to help showcase Sophie and Deo's positive impact on the school.

Sophie was recognized as a Shining Star for being the “picture of Emerson”, involved in several activities throughout her three years as an Eagle. She has been part of the painting crew, the musical, band, choir, video game club, jazz band, Soaring Eagles, and SGA.

“My greatest memory of you, Sophie, is three years ago when you were a sixth grader, and you were one of just two girls who shaved your head for the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser,” said Assistant Principal Soulias. “That just showed what kind of person you are.”

A survey was sent to Emerson staff and students to describe Sophie in one word. “Everything written up there is true. You’re kind, you’re dedicated, you’re helpful, you’re a role model in so many ways for our students,” said Soulias. One classmate preferred a longer “word”, Literally-the-best-person-on-earth-so-helpful-and-always-is-there-when-you-need-it.

The Emerson staff member, Deo Valentin, was described as someone who works hard behind the scenes and impacts everyone in the school. “Deo, your dedication, work, and kindness do not go unnoticed,” said Principal Shulman. From arriving early in the morning to ensuring that the school is ready for the day to staying late to fix, clean, or lend a hand, you are quite the force that keeps everybody running smoothly.”

He cares for the building and "the people inside of it." Whether offering a friendly smile, helping a teacher, or ensuring classrooms are safe and clean, Deo shows pride in his work. “You teach us all something very important: that respect, responsibility, and kindness are shown through actions and not just words,” said Shulman.

When staff were asked to describe Deo in one word, responses included friendly, reliable, caring, patient, and humble.

Congrats to Sophie and Deo, and way to be awesome members of the Emerson and D64 community!
