Cold Weather Recess Guidelines
Based on "feels like" temperatures from the National Weather Service
- 10° or Warmer: Full Outdoor Recess
- Between 1° and 9°: Principal Discretion*
- 0° or Colder: Indoor Recess
Parent Reminder: Please be sure your children are wearing winter gear and are dressed in layers. Also, don't forget to label items with your child's name.
Guidance: We use ISBE's Child Care Weather Watch guidelines to help make outdoor recess decisions.
*Note: If it's between 1° and 9°, the principal can decide whether to have indoor recess or an abbreviated time outside.
Hot Weather Recess Guidelines
Based on Heat Index temperatures from the National Weather Service
- 99° or Below: Full Outdoor Recess
- 100° or Above: Indoor Recess
Parent Reminder: Please be sure your children are hydrating properly and are wearing lightweight clothing.

Air Quality Weather Guidelines
Based on the Air Quality Index (AQI)
- Green (Good): Full Outdoor Recess
- Yellow (Moderate): Full Outdoor Recess
- Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Altered Outdoor Recess (adjust to lower length & intensity)
- Red (Unhealthy): Indoor Recess
Guidance: Air quality guidance is taken from the EPA and CDC. AirNow.gov has also provided a guide to keep children active while protecting their health.
