Washington Elementary School recently celebrated two outstanding individuals who exemplify the spirit of courage, kindness, and care: 5th-grade student Charlie Nye and school psychologist Julie Dorencz. They were both honored as D64 Shining Stars at our recent School Board meeting.
Principal Angie Brito started the introduction by sharing that every day, Washington ends its morning announcements with, “Have courage, be kind, and be the reason someone smiles today.” Brito noted that when thinking about students who embody those things, Nye immediately came to mind. His teachers described him as “delightful,” enthusiastic, and genuinely happy, with an impressive ability to brighten the hallways and classroom.
Nye is known for his great sense of humor and for always being “super kind to every single person he meets.” He is also a helpful role model as a member of the Safety Patrol, demonstrating responsibility and respect for younger students. “He definitely shows our younger kids how to follow the rules, how to get to the bus, all of those great things. So we appreciate him, and the younger students look up to you, Charlie. Not just for what you do, but how you do it,” said Brito.
Also recognized was Julie Dorencz, a School Psychologist, whose dedication and expertise are invaluable to the Wildcat community. Brito said that Dorencz is a highly committed member of the special education and MTSS teams, always taking the initiative to ensure all students receive the support they need and deserve. Her colleagues rely on her for guidance and her deep understanding of the work.
Most notably, her calming presence and empathy shine when she connects with parents during challenging meetings, earning their trust. “It brings such a calming presence that helps them feel safe in an IEP meeting. It’s really such a gift, and she’s quite good at it,” said Brito.
Brito also highlighted Dorencz’s superpower of being organized, calling her the "queen of the spreadsheet," who keeps the team on track. “Julie, you’re amazing. Not only for what you do, but how you do it with your compassion, your inclusion, and being a leader,” said Brito.
Thank you to Charlie Nye and Julie Dorencz for bringing such immense kindness and leadership to Washington and District 64!
