D64 Combined Philharmonic Orchestra Clinic Strikes a Harmonious Chord

D64 students perform at the Orchestra Clinic at Emerson Middle School

On Tuesday, April 14, the Emerson and Lincoln Middle School Philharmonic Orchestras came together for the annual D64 Combined Philharmonic Orchestra Clinic. The morning event brought together the Philharmonic Orchestras from both middle schools for a collaborative and inspiring musical experience.

Students had the unique opportunity to work under the direction of esteemed guest clinician and conductor Joanne May, whose expertise and enthusiasm made a lasting impression on all involved. Throughout the clinic, students rehearsed selections in preparation for their upcoming spring concerts, focusing on musicality, ensemble cohesion, and expressive performance techniques.

In addition to intensive rehearsal work, the clinic also included fun (slightly competitive!) team-building games that helped students connect with peers from the other school. These activities fostered a sense of camaraderie and community, reinforcing the shared passion for music across both ensembles.

Participants also benefited from valuable feedback provided by Mrs. May, who offered insightful strategies for continued growth and refinement. She expressed how impressed she was with the talent, dedication, and professionalism demonstrated by both orchestras.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see students from both schools come together to learn, collaborate, and grow through music. Opportunities like this clinic not only strengthen their musicianship, but also build confidence, connection, and a shared sense of pride in being part of our instrumental music community,,” says Erica Faulhaber, orchestra director and Curriculum Specialist for Instrumental Music.

We look forward to hearing the results of this collaboration at the upcoming spring concerts and celebrating the continued success of our outstanding music programs. Special thanks to Faulhaber and Max Hellermann, the directors of the Philharmonic Orchestras, for putting together this fantastic clinic experience.
