The Emerson Middle School 8th-grade promotional dance proved that celebrating can be done sustainably. By rethinking traditional party staples, this year’s committee threw a successful, eco-friendly event.
- Ditching the Disposable Plastics: Instead of single-use sports drinks and water bottles, the dance utilized large beverage carafes and compostable paper cups. This saved over 250 plastic bottles from entering the waste stream and made post-event cleanup a breeze.
- Mindful Disposal: Two dedicated waste-sorting stations (divided into landfill, recycling, and compost) were used. Students were encouraged to pause and sort their waste intentionally, while parent volunteers used tongs to remove misplaced items.
- Sustainable Styling: The dance committee partnered with G & G Party Decor and Styling to prioritize rentals, reuse balloon elements, and drastically scale back the reliance on disposable decorations.
